Dos and Don'ts

Here are some phrases to consider avoiding, along with mindful alternatives. Using these phrases does not reflect poorly on your character; however, it is crucial to recognize that certain words can trigger responses in others that may not be immediately apparent to you. This space encourages you to educate yourself and cultivate greater self-awareness regarding the impact of your words on those around you, and on yourself.

AVOID:

INSTEAD:

-"Just get over it."
-"Stop being so dramatic!"
-"You are overreacting."
-"Stop pretending that you’re hurting." 
-"I don’t understand your problem!"

-"I understand that you are struggling right now, but I am here to support you."
-"I am here for you. I get that you are feeling a lot, but know you are loved." 
-"I understand you are in a lot of pain right now. Your feelings are valid."
-"You deserve attention and love. I am here for you if you need it."
-"I may not understand, but I am willing to listen."

PERTAINING TO EATING/FOOD

AVOID:

WHY?

-"That’s so big back."
-"Ugh, that has so many calories in it."
-"This is definitely my cheat meal!"
-"Oh my gosh, I am cutting because of prom coming up—to fit into my dress!"
-"Ew, I look so fat in that picture. I have to lose weight."
-"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."

It is disrespectful to assume that people won't react to your 'joke' the same way. Yes, it might seem funny to say these things, but other people may resort to unhealthy behaviors because of a statement that may have caused a short laugh, but in contrast these same words could echo in people's minds; berating them to 'do better.'

Saying these things doesn't make you a bad person, but it makes you a better person to realize the weight of your actions-and correct them. 

PERTAINING TO OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is is a mental. disorder characterized by intrusive, obsessive thoughts. and compulsive, repetitive behaviors that often. significantly interfere with work, school, relationships, and other activities and responsibilities.

AVOID:

-"Ugh, that was so OCD. I made my bed and folded the corners."
-"The intrusive thoughts are kicking in…"
-"Everyone has OCD. Stop attention seeking."
